Clinical Trials: Early ending of cancer trials prompts concern
13 april 2008
Increasing numbers of cancer trials are being stopped early, after finding an apparent benefit for patients, prompting concerns the trend may be partly motivated by commercial interests. A study shows that almost 80% of trials that ended prematurely in the past three years, after early positive results, were used to support drug registration applications. The study authors suggest that a commercial component exists in stopping trials prematurely. The practice could also cause harm to patients if it led to unreliably findings being prematurely translated into clinical practice, the authors said.
